The Instagram Trap

There is this increase of framework in which it is favored to communicate on Instagram, rather than just do things as you want. Instagram wants us to post consistently, with mixed formats (reels, IGTV, swipe throughs, products, guides..). It wants comments with more than 5 words, it wants saves, it wants shares. It wants story interactions, messages, poles and and tags.

The more opinionated, the more radical, the more controversial posts get the most attention. The ones we feel so strongly about we just might let the microphone drop in the comment section. Now what does that do for a society in which people face different struggles? We are from different backgrounds, we have different life experiences and these lead us to different views.

If I want this post to be popular I need to have a conclusion. I need to make a statement, something you will identify with and want to share. Then I get more likes, more views, more followers, more attention, more work. In this economy of attention I will have it easier. Or so it seams, if only it weren’t a trap.
